Turning that lead into a repair order takes more care. Zisheng Electric recommends checking the measurement conditions and the electrical context before a hot-looking connection becomes a purchase request for new bushings, cable terminations or an unplanned outage.

This article is for industrial maintenance engineers, electrical supervisors and buyers reviewing infrared inspection findings. It focuses on accessible external surfaces and connection-related decisions. The owner’s electrical safety rules govern access and inspection; a camera does not make an energized work area safe or authorize opening an enclosure.

Review sequence

Identify the actual target

Establish a comparable load

Review surface and reflection effects

Check the image quality

Choose the next engineering action

Define a usable repair enquiry

Close the finding after work

1. Identify what transformer thermography actually measured

Start with equipment identity and location. Record the transformer serial number or asset reference, the winding side, the phase and the exact point visible in the image. A caption such as “HV side hot” is too broad for someone arranging access, assessing a connector or ordering a replacement part.

FLIR’s thermal-camera guidance explains that the camera measures surface temperature and that accuracy depends on the target and measurement conditions. A tank-wall image is therefore not a direct measurement of an internal winding hot spot. Neither is a warm bushing surface, on its own, proof of a particular internal defect.

Keep the visible-light image beside the thermal record. It should show where the region of interest lies and what material is being viewed. Include enough surrounding equipment to distinguish adjacent connections without exposing sensitive site identifiers in a public report.

2. Establish a comparison that the load supports

A phase-to-phase comparison is useful only when the components and loading are sufficiently comparable. Record the phase currents, the operating duty and the time of inspection. A connection carrying a different current can have a different temperature without sharing the same defect condition as its neighbours.

Also ask whether the plant was stable. Starting a large motor, transferring a feeder or changing cooling stages shortly before the scan can make a single image a poor baseline. Preserve the load history needed to interpret the observation rather than assuming that the current displayed after the inspection represents the earlier image.

Keep temperature differences tied to their reference

State whether a reported difference compares one phase with another, the component with ambient air, or the same target with an earlier survey. Those comparisons answer different questions. Record the reference value and why the reference is suitable. A coloured rectangle labelled “maximum” is not enough.

FLIR’s discussion of electrical thermography documentation highlights comparison under similar loading and recording the area of concern against its reference. The cited NFPA edition belongs to its own applicability framework; this article does not present it as an automatic legal requirement for every African or Gulf installation.

3. Review surface effects in transformer thermography

Transformer thermography becomes especially easy to misread around bright metal. A polished connector, painted tank, porcelain surface and weathered cable termination do not present the same radiometric conditions. Do not assume that one camera setting makes their displayed temperatures directly interchangeable.

The manufacturer’s thermographic measurement techniques manual identifies emissivity, reflected apparent temperature, distance and atmospheric conditions among the measurement inputs. For infrared windows or external optics, the relevant transmission and temperature settings also require attention. Use the actual camera and window documentation.

In practical report review, ask the inspector how the settings were established and whether the target filled a suitable measurement area. Do not instruct an operator to apply tape, paint or a contact probe to live equipment merely to improve a reading. Any physical preparation must be planned under the approved work conditions.

Thermal colours help locate a pattern; they do not by themselves establish a defect or an acceptance temperature. This image is not the measurement record for a customer asset.

4. Check whether the image can support the claimed conclusion

Focus, target size and viewing position matter. A blurred image or a tiny connector seen from a long distance may produce a visually persuasive pattern with insufficient measurement detail. Ask for the original radiometric file when the camera supports it, together with the visible-light record and the recorded settings.

Review weather and nearby heat sources. Direct sun, wind, rain, a hot process exhaust or reflected surroundings can complicate interpretation. The report should say what was observed and what could not be separated reliably. An uncertainty statement is more useful than a false level of precision.

Use repeat observations to resolve a question

A planned repeat scan can test whether a pattern persists under comparable conditions. The inspection plan should identify the target, load window, viewing position and settings to retain. If the first survey missed the phase-current record, a second colourful image without that record does not close the gap.

Do not turn a change in palette into a change in equipment condition. Preserve numerical values and a consistent comparison method. Different colour scales can make the same temperature distribution look much more or less severe.

5. Choose the next action from the evidence

Use transformer thermography as part of a condition-assessment process. The owner sets urgency using the actual component limits, observed pattern, trend, operating duty, other symptoms and applicable maintenance criteria. A generic online temperature table cannot replace that decision.

Finding in the report

Question to resolve

Useful next action

One connection appears warmer than its peers

Are current, material, geometry and viewing conditions comparable?

Validate the comparison and request an engineer’s assessment of the connection

Reflective metal produces an unstable reading

How much of the signal may come from the surroundings?

Review settings and a safe repeat-inspection method before assigning a repair

A broad tank or cooler pattern changes

Did loading, cooling state or weather also change?

Review the operating trends and cooling information alongside the scan

Image cannot locate the reported hot point

Which physical component would the contractor repair?

Return the report for target identification and a visible-light reference

A comparable anomaly persists after work

Was the cause corrected and the original target reassessed?

Keep the finding open for further engineering review

Check other available information without treating it as interchangeable evidence. The winding temperature indicator guide helps distinguish an instrument’s sensing basis from a surface scan. A normal indicator reading does not automatically cancel a local connection concern.

Likewise, a warm cooling-bank image should be assessed with the actual cooling state. The industrial cooling design and maintenance discussion provides the wider context. The scan can raise a question about airflow or circulation; the thermal colour alone does not prove which mechanism failed.

6. Give procurement a repair scope it can compare

Once engineering has defined the concern, convert it into an identifiable work scope. Include the component drawing, equipment identity, connection arrangement, conductor details, inspection findings, required outage boundary and acceptance evidence. Distinguish an investigation from a confirmed replacement requirement.

Ask bidders to state assumptions. Does the price cover inspection only, dismantling under an approved outage, replacement hardware, specified tests, reassembly records and a comparable follow-up scan? Who supplies access, lifting support and any special tools? The cheapest quote may simply omit the work needed to establish whether the anomaly has been resolved.

Do not buy a torque value from a photograph

A thermal pattern cannot establish the correct tightening torque or prove that a loose joint is the cause. Joint materials, hardware and the manufacturer’s assembly instructions determine the permitted work. Request the controlled procedure and the engineer’s disposition rather than instructing a contractor to “tighten every warm connection.”

For replacement planning, retain the as-found evidence before work and identify what must be documented during the outage. A useful procurement package tells the contractor what evidence is required, while leaving the site authorization and technical release with the responsible owner.

7. Close transformer thermography findings with a comparable follow-up

The transformer thermography record should link the original concern, the authorized work and the post-work verification. Record what was repaired, what was found during the work and whether the original comparison can now be repeated under suitable operating conditions.

A low-load scan immediately after energization may be a useful first observation but an inadequate final comparison. If the required duty has not occurred, state that the finding remains subject to a later check. Assign an owner and a review window that fits the actual plant schedule.

Zisheng Electric can support specification and interface review for 110kV and 115kV power transformers và 132kV and 138kV power transformers.
