Saudi Arabia\u2019s Environment Cannot Be Fully Covered by a \u201c40\u00b0C Standard\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1536\">Under the IEC 60076 series, transformer service conditions are generally based on a <strong data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1270\">maximum ambient temperature of 40\u00b0C<\/strong>. However, daytime temperatures in Saudi Arabia often exceed 50\u00b0C during summer. When transformers are installed outdoors without shading, direct afternoon solar radiation can raise the transformer tank surface temperature well above the surrounding air temperature.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1538\" data-end=\"1650\">The difference between standard conditions and actual site conditions is not simply a matter of several degrees.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1652\" data-end=\"2126\">According to the theory of <strong data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1722\">thermal aging of transformer insulation<\/strong>, an increase in winding hot-spot temperature can significantly accelerate insulation aging. As temperature rises, insulation life can decrease exponentially. If a transformer designed around an average ambient temperature of approximately 20\u00b0C is placed directly into a 50\u00b0C desert environment without proper design adjustments, its expected service life of several decades may be substantially reduced.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1rn1hfk\" data-start=\"2128\" data-end=\"2205\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2205\">2. Several Key Factors Must Be Considered During Transformer Selection<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"m3apmw\" data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2271\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2271\">1. The Ambient Temperature Design Basis Must Be Adjusted<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2273\" data-end=\"2540\">The temperature-rise limits specified in IEC standards are based on defined service conditions, including a maximum ambient temperature of 40\u00b0C. If this basis is applied directly to a Saudi project without adjustment, the available thermal margin may be insufficient.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2542\" data-end=\"2662\">In actual projects, many Saudi owners specify that transformers must be <strong data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2661\">designed for an ambient temperature of 55\u00b0C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1dec13g\" data-start=\"2664\" data-end=\"2715\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2668\" data-end=\"2715\">2. The Insulation System Should Be Upgraded<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"3022\">A conventional Class A insulation system may provide limited thermal margin under demanding Saudi operating conditions. For the project mentioned above, we adopted a <strong data-start=\"2883\" data-end=\"2912\">Class F insulation system<\/strong>. Today, some Saudi projects specify <strong data-start=\"2949\" data-end=\"3021\">Class H insulation or higher-temperature aramid insulation materials<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3024\" data-end=\"3136\">These materials provide greater thermal resistance and additional safety margin under high ambient temperatures.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3138\" data-end=\"3453\">Saudi projects are typically designed in accordance with the <strong data-start=\"3199\" data-end=\"3219\">IEC 60076 series<\/strong>, together with applicable <strong data-start=\"3246\" data-end=\"3267\">SASO requirements<\/strong> and project-specific technical specifications. For oil-immersed transformers, the allowable top-oil temperature rise may be specified at <strong data-start=\"3405\" data-end=\"3413\">55 K<\/strong>, depending on the project requirements.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3455\" data-end=\"3580\">Meeting the specified thermal performance during testing is therefore an important part of project acceptance and compliance.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1cgmmza\" data-start=\"3582\" data-end=\"3635\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3635\" data-is-last-node=\"\">3. Under Saudi operating conditions, the cooling area used in a conventional transformer design is often insufficient.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mt-3 w-full empty:hidden has-[&gt;_:empty]:hidden\">\n<div class=\"text-center\">\n<p data-start=\"293\" data-end=\"713\">Our approach is to increase the <strong data-start=\"325\" data-end=\"403\">radiator surface area by more than 30% compared with a conventional design<\/strong>. For medium- and large-capacity transformers, <strong data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"483\">ONAF (Oil Natural Air Forced)<\/strong> cooling is a common option. Compared with <strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"560\">ONAN (Oil Natural Air Natural)<\/strong> cooling, it can increase the available loading capability by approximately <strong data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"650\">30% to 50%<\/strong>, depending on the transformer design and operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"833\">For higher-capacity units with greater cooling requirements, <strong data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"808\">OFAF (Oil Forced Air Forced)<\/strong> cooling may be required.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"vxzrua\" data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"901\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"839\" data-end=\"901\">4. based on a <strong data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2915\">55\u00b0C ambient temperature<\/strong>.
