In early 2026, a local electrical engineering contractor in western Kenya contacted our team while preparing equipment for a rural distribution network expansion project. The project formed part of a regional electrification program aimed at connecting several villages, agricultural facilities, and public service buildings to the national 11kV distribution network.

The contractor had previously experienced repeated failures with locally supplied transformers. High winding temperatures during peak agricultural seasons and inconsistent voltage regulation had resulted in increased maintenance costs and frequent service interruptions.

Engineering Considerations

Unlike urban distribution networks, rural feeders in western Kenya often experience significant daily load fluctuations.

Electricity demand typically increases during irrigation periods, maize processing seasons, and evening residential consumption. To improve voltage stability under these changing conditions, the transformer incorporated several design features.

The magnetic core was manufactured using high-permeability cold rolled grain-oriented silicon steel, helping to reduce no-load losses while improving operating efficiency.

Copper windings were selected to enhance thermal performance during extended periods of high loading.

A sealed tank structure was adopted to minimize moisture ingress during the rainy season and reduce routine maintenance requirements.

These design choices were based on the customer’s operational environment rather than simply following standard catalogue specifications.


Factory Testing Before Shipment

Before delivery, every transformer underwent routine testing in our factory in accordance with IEC 60076 requirements.

The testing program included:

  • Applied Voltage Test
  • Induced Voltage Test

Each unit was released only after all test values met the contractual technical requirements.

Installation and Commissioning

Installation was completed by the local contractor together with the regional utility maintenance team.

Because many installation sites were located in mountainous villages with limited road access, the compact dimensions and optimized lifting structure of the transformer simplified transportation and pole installation.

Following energization, voltage measurements taken at the far end of the distribution feeders showed noticeably improved stability compared with the existing network configuration.

The transformer has now been operating continuously under outdoor conditions through both dry and rainy seasons.


Project Outcome

The completed installation now supplies electricity to more than 600 residential users, several schools, a rural medical clinic, local water pumping stations, and a number of small agricultural processing workshops.

According to feedback received during routine follow-up communication, the equipment has demonstrated stable operating temperatures, low operating noise, and consistent voltage performance during seasonal load changes.

The contractor also noted that the delivery schedule and technical documentation met the project requirements, allowing installation work to proceed withoutdelay.
