In a Gulf brownfield plant, that space may have been fixed years before the new transformer was ordered. A replacement unit can have the correct electrical rating and fit the foundation while still leaving too little room to form cables, install termination kits or reach a bolted connection. The survey should resolve those constraints before the cable box drawing is released for manufacture.

This guide is for EPC engineers, plant owners and procurement teams expanding or renewing an existing industrial installation. It covers the cable-to-transformer physical interface, rather than the complete transformer replacement scope. Gulf locations do not share one voltage, frequency or environmental design basis. Use the approved site data, utility requirements and owner procedures. This is a planning guide, not an instruction to open energized compartments or perform electrical work without authorized site controls.

Define the transformer cable entry survey boundary

Identify each incoming and outgoing cable circuit on the approved single-line diagram. Mark the cable trench, duct exit, tray, local support, gland plate, termination kit and transformer terminal as separate interfaces. The last cable support is especially important: its location determines how the cable approaches the box and whether its weight or forming forces are transferred to the termination. Record which items remain fixed and which can be changed before the project shutdown.

The output should be a dimensioned interface drawing and an evidence register. A general photograph of the transformer is useful context, but it cannot establish a hidden trench depth or the internal clearance behind a gland plate. Give each photograph a location, viewing direction and drawing reference. Where access is unavailable, mark the dimension as unverified and assign a hold point. A bidder should see the uncertainty rather than receive an invented measurement.

The broader Gulf transformer replacement survey addresses foundation, transport and operating interfaces. The cable entry survey develops one narrower decision: can the selected cable and termination arrangement be installed and maintained within the actual connection envelope?

Capture the cable identity before measuring the box

Obtain the exact cable data sheet and installed cable schedule. Record conductor material and cross-section, single-core or multicore construction, insulation system, overall diameter, armour or metallic screen, circuit quantity and phase grouping. Check the markings where safely accessible. An old schedule describing only voltage and conductor size may not identify the cable construction needed to select a gland or termination kit.

Ask the cable and accessory suppliers to confirm the approved combination. A termination kit must suit the cable dimensions and insulation interface, not merely the nominal voltage. The completed termination also occupies space beyond the bare conductor: stress-control components, lug dimensions, insulation clearances and installation tools all affect the required enclosure. Keep those requirements linked to the supplier drawing revision.

For existing cables, identify the available free length and condition, previous joints, history of repairs and limits on reuse. A cable that reaches the old terminal may not reach a terminal moved upward or sideways. Do not assume that a new lug or tighter bend solves the difference. The owner and responsible cable engineer should decide whether reuse, a new cable section or a redesigned entry arrangement is acceptable.

Separate installation bend space from the final cable position

The cable route must work while the cable is being installed as well as after it is fixed in place. Prysmian’s cable bending guidance distinguishes the pulling condition from the final untensioned condition for medium-voltage cables. It also points users to cable-specific data. A drawing based only on the smaller final bend can therefore underestimate the space needed during installation.

Use the limits supplied for the actual cable, pulling method and termination system. Avoid inserting a universal multiple of cable diameter into the transformer specification. The cable engineer should confirm bending radius, pulling tension and sidewall-pressure limits together, then check the route and installation method. Greater pulling loads can change the acceptable bend arrangement.

Measure the three-dimensional path rather than one distance on a plan. Record the duct exit elevation, trench edge, plinth, cable box entry plane, terminal centerline and obstructions. Include removable trench covers and the space used by rollers or temporary supports. A bend that appears generous in plan can be constrained vertically by a slab, enclosure floor or adjacent tray.

Check both the installation envelope and the final supported position using cable-specific requirements.

Check tool access and termination assembly space

Leave room for the termination installation procedure, conductor preparation, fastening tools and inspection. Tool access cannot be inferred from electrical clearance alone. Check the door opening, removable panels and the sequence for installing multiple cables. If the last termination blocks access to an earlier connection, the installation may be impossible to inspect or maintain without disturbing other circuits.

Termination fit includes accessory dimensions, tool access, assembly sequence and future replacement space.

Turn field measurements into procurement decisions

Use a common reference system for the transformer supplier, cable contractor and civil team. Establish a surveyed datum and show the viewing direction on every interface drawing. Identify measurement units and tolerances explicitly. “Left cable entry” is ambiguous when one party views the transformer from the high-voltage side and another from the cable trench.

Survey item

Необходимые доказательства

Decision affected

Release condition

Cable construction and quantity

Verified schedule, markings and cable data sheets

Termination kit, gland size and phase grouping

Cable and accessory compatibility confirmed

Trench and duct geometry

Measured levels, exit direction and accessible route

Entry orientation and cable-forming envelope

Installation route reviewed by the cable engineer

Existing free cable length

Measured available length and condition assessment

Reuse, extension or cable replacement scope

Owner accepts the proposed cable disposition

Terminal and lug arrangement

Supplier drawings, phase order and fastening access

Box dimensions, connection height and support detail

Coordinated terminal drawing approved

Gland plate and sealing

Cable diameters, gland details and exposure basis

Plate material, hole layout and enclosure sealing

Supplier confirms the complete assembly

Cable support and screen bonding

Support layout and approved earthing design

Mechanical restraint and bonding interfaces

Electrical and mechanical responsibilities assigned

Maintenance envelope

Door sweep, removable parts and tool-access check

Future inspection and termination replacement

Owner maintenance team accepts the arrangement

Add a responsible party, drawing revision and closure date to the project version of this table. Keep measured facts separate from proposed design changes. If the trench must be modified, show that modification as a priced and approved item rather than allowing the transformer supplier to assume it will happen.

Coordinate glands, supports and earthing as one interface

The gland plate layout should accommodate the actual cable diameters, gland bodies and installation tools. Confirm edge distances and spacing from the complete accessory drawings. Check whether the plate is removable, how it is sealed and how a future replacement cable can be installed. The selection of plate material for single-core AC cable arrangements needs electrical design review; a generic steel plate detail should not be copied without checking induced-heating implications.

Cable supports should keep cable weight and mechanical movement from being carried unintentionally by the transformer terminals. The responsible designer must determine support and restraint requirements for normal service and the applicable fault duty. Record where the transformer supplier’s responsibility ends and the cable contractor’s begins. A drawing that shows only a terminal and a cable line does not allocate either task.

Screen, armour and protective-earthing connections should follow the approved system design. Identify the bonding points, accessible test locations and any separate screen-bonding equipment. Do not choose single-point or multiple-point screen bonding from a regional assumption. The cable system study, route and owner requirements determine the arrangement.

Coordinate cable glands, plate sealing, mechanical supports and the approved bonding design.

Use site exposure data rather than a Gulf default

Request the actual outdoor or indoor exposure, dust conditions, water pathways and enclosure requirements. Coordinate gland sealing with the cable compartment ventilation or moisture-control arrangement. Our terminal box condensation guide covers moisture management in more detail. This survey checks whether the chosen glands, plates and maintenance openings fit that agreed design.

Agree the survey hold points before the outage

Some dimensions can be measured from outside a closed enclosure. Others require the owner to authorize isolation and access under plant procedures. Classify the evidence accordingly. Do not present an inaccessible internal dimension as field verified. If manufacture must proceed before access becomes available, obtain a written engineering decision on the uncertainty and the permitted adjustment range.

A controlled contingency might involve a replaceable gland plate or a defined terminal adaptation, but it must be designed and approved. It is not permission for the site crew to drill arbitrary holes or force cables into position. State which component can change, who approves the change and which checks must be repeated. Procurement should price any required site service and material before mobilization.

For parallel cable runs, label each circuit and phase consistently across drawings, cables and terminals. The final arrangement should make identification possible after the compartment is complete. Record the relationship between the installation sequence and the owner’s inspection points. An accessible early connection may become hidden once the remaining cables are formed and supported.

Check the manufactured interface before dispatch

Review the final cable box drawing against the agreed survey datum, entry elevation, terminal position, phase order, termination envelope and gland plate scope. Compare the supplier’s assembled dimensions with the approved interface drawing. A shipping outline is insufficient if doors, extension boxes or accessories are fitted later.

Where specified, use a dimensional inspection or an approved mock-up with representative cable and accessory envelopes. The objective is to establish physical fit, not to replace electrical tests or certify the cable system. Record any dimensional deviation and its disposition before shipment. A successful transformer electrical test will not establish that the installation contractor can reach a terminal bolt.

At site, compare the delivered assembly with the approved drawing before committing to cable work. Record damage, missing parts, plate details and support interfaces. The commissioning team should define the applicable cable, earthing and connection checks through its approved test plan. Keep the as-left drawing and inspection record with the equipment file.

Build a cable interface enquiry the supplier can answer

Send a compact survey pack containing the marked single-line diagram, verified cable schedule, cable and termination data sheets, dimensioned trench and plinth drawing, photographs, connection envelope and unresolved-access register. Include the actual load and system studies needed for transformer selection. Ask each bidder to identify deviations from the same interface basis.

For equipment discussion, Zisheng Electric can review the terminal arrangement of a Силовой трансформатор с масляным наполнителем мощностью 10 МВА, 33/11 кВ или а 10 kV class oil-immersed distribution transformer against project-specific requirements.
